Liaocheng Overview

Liaocheng, also known as the Water City, is a prefecture-level city in western Shandong province, People's Republic of China. It borders the provincial capital of Jinan to the southeast, Dezhou to the northeast, Tai'an to the south, and the provinces of Hebei and Henan to the west. The Grand Canal flows through the city center. Its population was 5,789,863 at the 2010 census whom 1,229,768 lived in the built-up area made up of Donchangfu district, even though large parts remain rural.


Liaocheng, the pretty Water City in Northern China, is a famous tourism city in the country with a long history and rich culture. It is situated in the western part of Shandong and connects the coastal part with developed economy and the inner land with abundant resources. It covers an area of 8715 square kilometers with a population of 5.9 million.


Liaocheng cultural

 Liaocheng's history dates back to about 3,000 BC. Archeologists have found relics of Longshan Cultural Town in the Liaocheng area. During the Spring-and-Autumn Period (770BC-403BC), Liaocheng was an important political and cultural center of Qi State. During the Han Dynasty, Liaocheng belonged to Qingzhou. The construction of the Grand Canal during the Sui and Tang Dynasties (AD581-AD907) boosted the city's economic growth. During AD1289-AD1415, Liaocheng became a commercial city along the Grand Canal. In 1997, Liaocheng became a prefecture level city of Shandong Province.


Liaocheng tourist attraction

Liaocheng has plentiful cultural, historical and natural scenery sites, such as Dongchang Lake Scenic Spot, Guangyue Pavillion, Shanxi and Shaanxi Complex, China Canal Culture Museum, Jiangdi Entertainment Park, Jingyang Ridge Tourist Resort and the Lion Tower. Dongchang Lake Scenic Spot is located southwest of Liaocheng, with the Grand Canal running across it. Dongchang Lake was built along the old city moat in AD1070. The center of the scenic spot is the old town of Liaocheng, which has a history of over 1,000 years. Shanxi and Shaanxi Mansion was built by merchants from Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province during the Qing Dynasty. The complex consists of the passage building, opera tower, bell tower, drum tower, pavilions and palaces.


The local dishes in Liaocheng belong to Shandong Cuisine. Popular dishes in the city include eight pieces cookie (a kind of fried snack separated into eight oval pieces), Jellied Bean-curd, Jimei Pickles, Luohan Cake (also known as pyramid cake), Linqing Chicken Sack (stewed chicken stuffed with diverse ingredients) and Laowangzhai Donkey Meat.
